Amouage Journey Man Perfume Review

Amouage Journey Man Eau de Parfum opens with a burst of pepper and bergamot, then citrus blossoms blow in and through a pine forest. It as a cooler feel initially before it gains a little warmth, but it always remained lighter and airier as the soft, lightly sweet floral note lingered throughout.

Over time, soft tobacco, incense smoke, and leather showed themselves to varying degrees. The drydown was still on the floral side with light sweetness, leather, and vanilla. It is described as a “spicy and woody fragrance” with the following notes:

• top notes: Sichuan pepper, bergamot, cardamom, neroli, bigarade
• heart notes: juniper berries, incense, pure geraniol, tobacco leaves
• base notes: tonka bean, cypriol, leather, ambrox

It had a piquant opening with Sichuan pepper, zippy bergamot, and cardamom with soft citrus blossoms in the background. A forest full of pine trees and shed pine needles grew after a few minutes. It was aromatic, tangy, and spicy with a cool, crisp feel. The citrus notes seemed to sweeten slightly but remained floral and soft, while the pepper withdrew, the cardamom lingered, and subtle tobacco joined.

Journey Man progressed linearly for the first hour after the opening–citrusy, floral, and tobacco–before it took on a slightly dry, woody undertone with soft leather with light incense. The citrus florals were still apparent, which kept the harmony of notes on the softer, lighter side.

As the leathery note pushed forward, the fragrance turned a little warmer, earthy and a touch animalic, with more noticeable smokiness. The drydown remained slightly fruity-floral sweet with touches of leather and vanilla.

Application

For testing, I used 1/3 of a 0.7ml sample vial dabbed to the underside and topside of my wrist area on my left arm. I used an unscented moisturizer prior to applying the scent as this is also my swatching arm (aka, incredibly parched at any given moment) as I found scent did not hold well here otherwise. 

I purchased my sample in January 2022; fragrances are known to be reformulated over their lifetime , so be mindful of when a review was made, e.g. a review from 2010 may not reflect what the same-named perfume smells like in 2022.

Longevity

It lasted for six hours until it was a skin-scent and about 10 hours before it was quite difficult to detect on my skin. The sillage was light while the projection was more moderate for the first two to three hours.

Personal Thoughts

I was surprised by how floral this ended up being throughout the development, which is not something I lean towards. I also expected this to wear longer overall, but it was more middle of the road in terms of longevity, so for those reasons, it didn’t end up a winner for me.
